Today’s selection concludes Surah 29, Al-‘Ankabüt or the Spider, verses 31-44. These verses tell of how the people of Prophet Lot and the nations of ‘Ad, Thamüd and Madyan as well as the Pharaoh of Egypt and his people rejected the Messengers of God and were destroyed as a result. Also told is the parable of those who take protectors other than God.

Today’s selection is from Surah 40, which goes by two names, Ghãfir which means Forgiver or Al-Mu’min or the Believer, verses 21-37. These verses claim that those who denied the Prophets and God’s revelations were all destroyed, case in point, the Pharaoh of Egypt and his leaders, Hamãn and Qarün. The Pharaoh intended to kill Prophet Moses but even one of his relatives gave a speech in favor of the Prophet.

These verses talk about leading the oppressed and so begin the story of Prophet Musa (Moses), including Pharaoh’s plot to kill the sons of the Israelites, and Prophet Moses’ youth and how he escaped retribution after killing a man.
