Today’s selection is from Surah 37, As-Sãffãt or Those Ranged in Ranks, verses 139-166. These verses tell the story of Prophet Jonah and the whale and address the unbelievers’ false claims that the Angels are the daughters of Allah and Jinns are blood relations to Allah.

Today’s selection consists of three very short Surahs.
The first is Surah 97, Al-Qadr or the Night of Power or Honour. This Surah deals with Laylatul Qadr, one of the most important nights in the Muslim calendar.
The second is Surah 98 – Al-Bayyinah or the Clear Evidence. This Surah is about how the People of the Book were united until they received the guidance of Allah as well as the commandment to establish prayers and pay charity.
The third is Surah 99 – Al-Zalzalah or the Earthquake. This short Surah reports on how an earthquake (metaphorically speaking) will herald the Day of Judgment and on that day, men will be shown the record of their acts.

These verses tell the story of how Joseph’s father, Jacob, received the news that Joseph was alive and his family’s relocation from Ken’ãn to Egypt and Joseph’s prayer that he live and die as one who submits to the will of God. It ends with the affirmation that Joseph’s story is confirmation of previous scriptures.

These verses continue the story of Prophet Joseph after he tricked his brothers to let his own brother Benjamin be retained in Joseph’s services. Joseph’s father sent his wicked brothers back to retrieve him, whereupon they begged for food and charity from Joseph, whom they still had not recognized.
