Surahs 97-99 (Al-Qadr, Al-Bayinnah, Al-Zalzalah) (Y6)

As-salaam wa-alaikum, brothers and sisters.

Summary

Today’s selection consists of three very short Surahs.

The first is Surah 97, Al-Qadr or the Night of Power or Honour. This Surah deals with Laylatul Qadr, one of the most important nights in the Muslim calendar.

The second is Surah 98 – Al-Bayyinah or the Clear Evidence. This Surah is about how the People of the Book were united until they received the guidance of Allah as well as the commandment to establish prayers and pay charity.

The third is Surah 99 – Al-Zalzalah or the Earthquake. This short Surah reports on how an earthquake (metaphorically speaking) will herald the Day of Judgment and on that day, men will be shown the record of their acts.

Verses

Surah 97 (Al-Qadr)

Bis-millahi ar-rahman, ar-raheem.
In the name of Allah, most gracious, most merciful…

Surely, We have revealed this (Qur’an) in the night of Qadr. [1] And what could make you understand what the night of Qadr is![2] The night of Qadr is better than one thousand months. [3] The angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) come down, by the leave of their Rabb, with all Decrees. [4] That night is the night of Peace, till the break of dawn. [5] 97:[1-5]

Ameen.

——

Surah 98 (Al-Bayinnah)

Bis-millahi ar-rahman, ar-raheem.
In the name of Allah, most gracious, most merciful.

Those who are unbelievers from among the people of the Book and from the polytheists (Mushrikeen) were not going to desist from their unbelief until the clear proof came to them,[1] that is, a Messenger of Allah reciting to them holy scriptures from purified pages,[2] containing infallible books.[3] Those who were given the Book before this (Qur’an) did not divide into sects until after there came to them a clear proof. [4] Yet, they were commanded nothing but to worship Allah, with their sincere devotion to Him, being True in their faith; to establish Salah (prayers); and to pay Zakah (obligatory charity); and that is the infallible true Religion.[5] Surely, those who disbelieve from among the people of the Book and the polytheists shall be in the fire of hell, to dwell therein forever. They are the worst of all creatures.[6] Surely, those who believe and do good deeds, are the best of all creatures.[7] Their reward with their Lord shall be the gardens of eternity, beneath which rivers flow, to dwell therein forever. Allah shall be well pleased with them and they shall be well pleased with Him. That is for him who fears his Rabb.[8] 98:[1-8]

Ameen.

——

Surah 99 (Al-Zalzalah)

Bis-millahi ar-rahman, ar-raheem.
In the name of Allah, most gracious, most merciful.

When the earth is shaken to its utmost convulsion,[1] and the earth brings out all its inner burdens,[2] man shall say: “What is happening to it?”[3] On that Day, it shall report whatever had happened on it,[4] for your Lord shall have commanded it to do so.[5] On that Day, men shall proceed in sorted out groups to be shown their Deeds.[6] Then, whoever has done an atom’s weight of good shall see it there,[7] and whoever has done an atom’s weight of evil shall see it there.[8] 99:[1-8]

Ameen.

This concludes today’s episode of the 17 Verses Podcast. I hope that this selection has helped increase your understanding of the holy Qur’an just a little bit.
