Qur’an

“We have enjoined upon man to treat his parents with kindness. With much trouble his mother bore him, and with much pain did she give him birth. His bear and his weaning took thirty months. When he reaches the age of full strength and becomes forty years old, he says, ‘My Lord! Grant me the grace that I may thank you for the favors which You have bestowed on me and on my parents, and that I may do good deeds that will please You, and grant me good children. Surely I turn to You in repentance and surely I am of those who are Muslims.” (Surah 46, Al-Ahqaf, Verse 15)

“Your Lord has decreed to you that: You shall worship none but him and be kind to your parents; if one or both of them live to their old age in your lifetime, you shall not say to them any word of contempt nor repel them and you shall address them in kind words. You shall lower to them your wings of humility out of mercy for them and pray: ‘O my Lord! Bestow on them Your blessings just as they cherished me when I was a little child.'” (Surah 17, Al-Isra, Verses 23-24)

“We have enjoined on man and woman (to be good) to their parents; show gratitude to Me and to your parents; to Me is (your final) Goal. If they (parents) strive to make you join in worship with Me things of which you have no knowledge, obey them not; yet treat them kindly in this world with justice (and consideration) and follow the way of those who turn to Me (in love).” (Surah 31, Luqman, Verses 14-15).

Hadith

Heaven lies at the feet of mothers. - Prophet Muhammad
Who is the most deserving of one's good company? YOUR MOTHER.

Abu Usaid Saidi said, “We were once sitting with Rasulullah when a man from the tribe of Salmah came and said to him, ‘O Messenger of Allah! do my parents have rights over me even after they have died?’

And Rasulullah said, ‘Yes. You must pray to Allah to bless them with His Forgiveness and Mercy, fulfill the promises they made to anyone, and respect their relations and their friends.'” (Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah).

It is narrated by Asma bint Abu Bakr that during the treaty of Hudaibiyah, her mother, who was then pagan, came from Makkah to see her. Asma informed the Messenger of Allah of her arrival and also that she needed help.

The Prophet said, “Be good to your mother.” (Bukhari, Muslim).

This concludes our bonus episode of the 17 Verses Podcast. I hope that these selections have helped increase your understanding of the holy Qur’an just a little bit.

Have a great Mother’s Day! Thank you and be well.
