Today’s selection is from Surah 75, Al-Qiyãmah or The Resurrection, verses 1-15. This short selection warns people to beware the Day of Resurrection and Judgment from which there is no escape.

Verses
Bis-millahi ar-rahman, ar-raheem.
In the name of Allah, most gracious, most merciful.I swear by the Day of Resurrection,[1] and I swear by the self reproaching soul![2] Does man think that We shall not be able to put his bones together?[3] Why not? We are able to put together, in perfect order, the very tips of his fingers.[4] But man wishes to keep on doing evil in the future as well.[5] He questions: “When will this Day of Resurrection be?”[6] Well, it will come when the sight shall be dazed,[7] the moon will be eclipsed,[8] and the sun and the moon will be brought together[9] – on that Day man will ask: “Is there any way to escape?”[10] Nay! There will be no refuge.[11] On that Day, the refuge will only be towards your Rabb.[12] On that Day man shall be told about all his deeds, from the first to the last.[13] Indeed, man shall bear witness against himself,[14] even though he shall plead with excuses.[15] 75:[1-15]

Concerning verse 2, “the self-reproaching soul”, which is one of the stages of development of the human soul:
Our doctors postulate three states or stages of the development of the human soul: (1) Ammarah (12:53) which is prone to evil, and if not checked and controlled, will lead to perdition; (2) Lawwamah, as here, which feels conscious of evil and resists it, asking for Allah’s grace and pardon after repentance and tries to amend, hoping to reach salvation; (3) Mutma’innah (89:27), the highest stage of all, when it achieves full rest and satisfaction. Our second stage may be compared to Conscience, except that in English usage, Conscience is a faculty and not a stage in spiritual development.
