Summary
Today’s selection is from Surah 28, Al-Qasas or the Narrations, verses 22-42. These verses continue the story of Prophet Musa (or Moses) after he fled from Pharaoh for killing a man, his arrival in the city of Madyan and his marriage. Later, we learn of his ascent of Mt Tûr, his conversation with God and his appointment as a Messenger of God. Lastly, the story of Moses’ struggle with Pharaoh and his chiefs and their defeat.

Verses
Bis-millahi ar-rahman, ar-raheem.
In the name of Allah, most gracious, most merciful.As he made Moses way towards the city of Madyan, he said: “Soon my Lord shall guide me to the Right Way.”[22] When he arrived at the well of Madyan, he saw a multitude of men watering their flocks, and besides them two women who were keeping their flocks back. He asked: “What is the problem?” They replied: “We cannot water our flocks until the shepherds take away their flocks from the water, because we are weak and our father is a very old man.”[23] So he watered their flocks for them and went back to the shade and prayed: “O my Lord! Surely, I am in desperate need of whatever good that You may send down to me.”[24] Soon after that, one of the two women came to him walking bashfully and said: “My father is calling you. He wishes to reward you for watering our flocks for us.” When Moses came to him and narrated his story, the old man said: “Have no fear. You have escaped from those wicked people.”[25] One of them said: “Father, hire him. The best that one can hire is a man who is strong and trustworthy.”[26] The old man said to Moses: “I am willing to give you one of my daughters in marriage if you stay in my service for eight years; but if you make it ten it would be gracious of you; for I do not want to impose any hardship on you; Allah willing, you will find me one of the righteous.”[27] Moses replied: “So be it an agreement between me and you. Whichever of the two terms I complete, let there be no compulsion on me. Allah is the surety over what we have agreed upon.”[28] 28:[22-28]
After completing the term of his agreement, when Moses (Moses) was travelling with his family, he saw a fire in the direction of Mount Tûr. He said to his family: “Stay here, I saw a fire and I hope to bring some information from there or a lighted torch with which you may warm yourselves.”[29] But when he reached there, a voice called out to him from the right side of the valley of the blessed spot from the tree, saying: “O Moses, surely, I am Allah, the Lord of the Worlds.”[30] Then Allah commanded, “Throw down your staff.” When Moses saw that the staff was writhing like a snake, he turned his back and fled, and did not even look back. Allah said, “O Moses, come back and do not fear; you are quite safe.[31] Now put your hand into your pocket: it will come out shining white without any harm to you – draw your hand towards yourself to ward off fear – these are two credentials from your Lord towards Pharaoh and his chiefs, surely, they are wicked people.”[32] Moses submitted: “O my Lord! I have killed one of them: I fear that they will put me to death.[33] My brother Haroon (Aaron), is more eloquent in speech than I: send him with me as a helper to confirm my words; I fear that they will treat me as a liar.”[34] Allah replied: “We will certainly strengthen you with your brother and give both of you such authority that they shall not be able to harm you. With Our signs you two as well as those who follow you will surely triumph.”[35] 28:[29-35]
