Verses

Bis-millahi ar-rahman, ar-raheem.
In the name of Allah, most gracious, most merciful.

He (the Prophet) frowned and turned away[1] when there came to him the blind man interrupting.[2] How could you tell? He might have sought to purify himself[3] or become reminded and might have benefited from Our reminder.[4] As for him who is indifferent,[5] to whom you were attending;[6] you will not be held responsible if he would not purify himself.[7] Yet to him who came to you with zeal on his own[8] and with fear of Allah in his heart,[9] you gave no heed.[10] It should not be so! Indeed, this is but an admonition;[11] let him who wants, accept it.[12] It is written in scrolls, which are honored,[13] exalted, purified,[14] and which remain in the hands of scribes,[15] who are noble and virtuous.[16] 80:[1-16]

Ameen.

Tafseer

Concerning the origins of this Surah:

[The Prophet (pbuh)] was once deeply and earnestly engaged in trying to explain the Holy Qur’an to Pagan Quraysh leaders when he was interrupted by a blind man, ‘Abd Allah ibn Umm Maktum, one who was also poor, so that not one took any notice of him. He wanted to learn the Qur’an. The holy Prophet (pbuh) naturally disliked the interruption and showed impatience. Perhaps the poor man’s feelings were hurt. But he whose gentle heart ever sympathised with the poor and the afflicted, got new Light from above, and without the least hesitation published this revelations, which forms part of the sacred scripture of Islam, as described in verses 13-16. And the Prophet (pbuh) always afterwards held the man in high honour.

This concludes today’s episode of the 17 Verses Podcast. I hope that this selection has helped increase your understanding of the holy Qur’an just a little bit.

Thank you and be well.
