Surah 43 (Az-Zukhruf), Verses 79-89 (Y6)

Summary

Today’s selection concludes Surah 43, Az-Zukhruf or the Golden Adornments, verses 79-89. These verses are a refutation of the Christian belief that God has a son. If God did have a son, Prophet Muhammad would be the first to worship him.

Tafseer for this selection deals with the translation of verse 86.

Verses

Bis-millahi ar-rahman, ar-raheem.
In the name of Allah, most gracious, most merciful.

If they have devised a plan to ruin you (O Muhammad), then surely We too shall devise a plan to ruin them.[79] Do they think that We cannot hear their secret talks and their private conversation? Of course We do, and Our angels who are assigned to them, record it all.[80] O Prophet tell the Christians: “If Allah had a son, I would be the first to worship him.”[81] Glory be to the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of the Throne, He is above what they ascribe to Him.[82] So let them blunder and play until they face their Day, which has been promised to them.[83] It is He (Allah) Who is God in the heavens and God on earth; He is the All-Wise, the All-Knowledgeable.[84] Blessed is He Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them! He Alone has the knowledge of the Hour of Doom, and to Him you shall all be brought back.[85] And those whom they invoke besides Allah have no power of intercession – only he who bears witness to the Truth, and they know (him). [86] If you ask them Who created them, they will certainly say: “Allah.” How then are they deluded away from the truth?[87] Allah has heard the Prophet’s cry: “O Lord! Surely these are a people who would not believe.”[88] Therefore, O Prophet! Bear with them and wish them peace. They shall soon come to know the truth.[89] 43:[79-89]

Ameen.

Tafseer

On the translation of verse 86:

The classical Commentators construe this clause differently. According to their construction, the clause would be translated, ‘except those bear witness to the Truth, and with full knowledge.’ ‘Truth’, they would construe to be the Gospel of Unity. According tp them, while idols and false gods have no power of intercession, persons like Jesus, who is falsely worshiped by his misguided followers, but who himself preached the Gospel of Unity with full understanding, will have the power of intercession. This implies that we construe the singular man shahida to refer to the same person or persons as the plural hum ya’lamun. This difficulty is removed if we construe as translated here. In that case ‘he who bears witness to the Truth’ is the Holy Prophet, who came to renew the Gospel of Unity, and ‘they know (him)’ would refer to the Quraysh, among whom he was brought up and among whom he earned the reputation of being a man of probity (Amin).

This concludes today’s episode of the 17 Verses Podcast. I hope that this selection has helped increase your understanding of the holy Qur’an just a little bit.
